CS2 trade protection explained: the 7-day rule, reversals and scams

Since July 2025, every CS2 item you get in a Steam trade is “Trade Protected” for 7 days. You can use it in game straight away, but for a week you can’t trade it on, sell it or open it, and the person who sent it can undo the trade. This guide explains the rule in plain words, using Valve’s own notes and the Steam Support FAQ, and shows how it changes buying, selling and withdrawing skins from sites.
What is CS2 trade protection?
Trade protection lets a Steam user reverse their recent trades if they lose control of their account, for example after malware or a phishing link. Valve added it on 15 July 2025 (16 July in Europe), in the Season Two: Episode One update for Counter-Strike 2.
- When a trade with CS2 items is confirmed, the items arrive at once. You can equip them and play with them.
- For the next 7 days the items are Trade Protected. Steam marks them with a yellow shield in your inventory and in the trade window.
- While an item is protected, it can’t be consumed, modified or transferred, and it can’t go into a Storage Unit.
- After 7 days the protection ends, and the trade can no longer be reversed.
- Day 0: the trade is confirmed The items arrive at once. You can equip them and play.
- Days 0–7: protected No trading, selling, opening, stickers, trade-ups or Storage Unit. The trade can still be reversed.
- Day 7: the shield is gone Trade, sell or open it as usual. The trade can no longer be reversed.
Only Counter-Strike 2 uses trade protection for now. Valve says it plans to bring it to other games on Steam. Because all items in one trade need the same level of protection, you can’t trade CS2 items and items from another game, such as Rust or Dota 2, in the same trade.
How long does trade protection last?
7 days after the trade is confirmed. Every CS2 item you receive in a trade gets it: from a friend, a trading bot, a marketplace or a case site’s withdrawal. There is no way to turn it off for your items or to remove the shield early, and Steam Support can’t lift it.
In exchange, the old Steam trade holds and trade escrow don’t apply to CS2 items any more. Whatever protection your account has, CS2 items move between accounts at once.
What you can and can’t do with a trade protected item
| During the 7 days | Allowed? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Equip it and play with it | Yes | Items arrive at once and work in game |
| Trade it to another account | No | It can’t be transferred |
| Sell it on the Steam Community Market | No | A sale transfers it to the buyer |
| Deposit it on a skin site or sell it to a marketplace | No | That is a trade too |
| Open it, if it is a case | No | Opening uses the case up |
| Apply a sticker, patch, charm or name tag to it | No | That modifies the weapon |
| Use a protected sticker or name tag on something else | No | That uses the sticker or tag up |
| Put it into a trade-up contract | No | The contract uses the items up |
| Move it into a Storage Unit | No | Valve’s FAQ names this one directly |
The “Why” column follows Valve’s rule that protected items “cannot be consumed, modified, or transferred”. Once the shield is gone, everything works as before.
What happens when someone reverses trades
You start a reversal yourself from the Trade History page of your Steam account. You don’t need to write to Steam Support, but first make sure you control the account again. If you don’t, contact Support.
- It is all or nothing. All trades with Trade Protected items from the last 7 days are reversed, not just one.
- Items go back to their previous owners, on both sides of each trade.
- The account that reverses gets a 30-day ban on trading and on the Steam Community Market. Its Market listings come back to the inventory, and its pending trade offers are cancelled. Steam Support can’t remove this cooldown.
- Trade partners get no cooldown. They lose the items they received in those trades and get back what they gave.
- Only trades made with the shield can be reversed. Trades from before the feature existed can’t be reversed, and Steam Support can’t change them.
The trade reversal scam, and how to avoid it
A reversal returns items, not money. In a skin-for-skin trade both sides get their own items back, so nobody loses anything but time. The danger is a sale for money paid outside Steam: crypto, PayPal, a bank transfer, gift cards or a site balance.
- A stranger sells you a skin, and you pay them outside Steam.
- They send the skin. It lands in your inventory with the yellow shield.
- Within 7 days they reverse their trades. The skin goes back to them, and your money stays with them.
The person who reverses gets a 30-day trade ban, but that doesn’t give you anything back. How to stay safe:
- Don’t pay a stranger outside Steam for a skin. Buy and sell through a marketplace that holds the seller’s money until the protection is over. Our list of legit CS2 trading sites shows how each one handles this.
- If a seller insists that you pay first and in private, walk away.
- Keep your own account safe, so you never need a reversal yourself: Steam Guard on, and never log in through links from strangers.
How trade protection changes skin sites
Marketplaces carry the reversal risk when they buy your skin, so most of them now pay sellers only after the protection ends. What the sites in our catalog say:
- Tradeit.gg shows the money at once but holds it for 7 days. It says most sellers are paid in 7 to 10 days, about 14 at worst.
- Lis-Skins pays CS2 sales after 8 days. Instant Payout needs an ID check and has a limit.
- Avan.market pays CS2 sales no earlier than 8 days after the trade; items from other games aren’t held. Instant payouts need an ID check.
- Moon.Market pays after the 7 days without an ID check, or at once with an ID check and within a limit.
- SkinBaron holds the money until the protection ends and it has checked that the trade wasn’t reversed.
Some sites wait 8 days instead of 7 as a safety margin. Our guide on selling CS2 skins for cash compares the payout times and methods.
When you withdraw a skin from a case site or a skin casino, it reaches your Steam inventory with the shield too. You can play with it at once, but you can only sell it, trade it on or deposit it elsewhere after 7 days. Sites themselves can’t send out skins they received less than 7 days ago. CSGOCases, for example, marks such skins “Delayed”: you can wait, sell the skin for balance or pick another one.
Trading changes in CS2 since 2025
From Valve’s CS2 update notes, newest first:
| Date | What changed |
|---|---|
| 22 April 2026 | Trade offers with CS2 items are limited to 1,000 items. |
| 4 March 2026 | Items listed on the Steam Community Market stay in your inventory and can be used while listed. They can’t be consumed or modified until you cancel the listing. |
| 12 November 2025 | Newly bought Name Tags and StatTrak™ Swap Tools can’t be traded or listed on the Market. |
| 3 September 2025 | Trade protected and rented items can be removed from favourites in the loadout. |
| 15 July 2025 | Trade protection starts: CS2 items received in trades are protected for 7 days, and recent trades can be reversed. |
As of 20 October 2026, the Steam Support FAQ still describes the same 7-day rule.
Questions about CS2 trade protection
Can I remove trade protection from my skins?
No. Every CS2 item stays protected for 7 days after the trade, there is no opt-out, and Steam Support can’t lift it.
Why can’t I open a case I just got?
Opening a case uses it up, and protected items can’t be consumed. Wait until the shield disappears, 7 days after the trade.
Does trade protection apply to Rust items?
No. For now, only Counter-Strike 2 has trade protected items. Rust items still follow Steam’s older trade hold rules: if your Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator hasn’t been on for 7 days, items leaving your account can be held for up to 15 days. A trade can’t mix CS2 items with Rust items. Our list of Rust gambling sites covers sites that take Rust skins.
My trade partner reversed our trade. Am I banned?
No. Only the account that started the reversal gets the 30-day trade and Market cooldown. You get back what you gave in that trade, and the items you received go back to them.
Is there still a 7-day trade hold in CS2?
Not the old kind. Trade holds and escrow no longer apply to CS2 items, which move at once. Trade protection replaced them with a 7-day period in which the item can’t be moved on and the trade can be reversed.
